Watersheds
A watershed is a geographic area draining to a common stream, lake or river. Watersheds are delineated by topography. To determine the boundaries of a watershed, ask the question, "if a drop of rain lands at a particular location, which way will it go?" Within Anoka County there are seven major watersheds, all of which drain to the Rum, Mississippi, or St. Croix Rivers.
Knowledge of watershed boundaries is critical to water quality and storm water management. In recognition of this, each major watershed within the metropolitan area is represented by a Watershed District or Watershed Management Organization. The primary role of these local units of government is to review and issue permits for actions that may affect storm water management, water quality, and in some cases, wetlands. They also contract with consultants or the Anoka Conservation District to perform management, monitoring, or research. Further information about each of these Watershed Districts and Watershed Management Organizations is on the Watersheds page.
