Impaired Streams List
Under the federal Clean Water Act the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (PCA) must evaluate streams, rivers, and lakes to determine which do not meet water quality standards. This list, called the 303(d) list is produced every two years. For each impaired waterway the PCA must establish a target date for conducting a study that will determine the source of pollutants and what reductions are needed in order to meet water quality standards. These studies and the related efforts are referred to as Total Maximum Daily Loads, or TMDL's.
