Typo Lakeshore Restoration and Erosion Correction

Through a cost share grant from the SRWMO, a private landowner on Typo Lake has worked to install a buffer of native vegetation and correct shoreline erosion problems with soft engineering techniques. This project, installed in fall 2004, will simultaneously provide multiple benefits to the lake:

  1. Correct existing erosion problems
  2. Serve as a buffer to protect the lake from impacts associated home construction to occur soon. After home construction, the buffer will continue to provide the same benefits.
  3. 3. Aquatic plants installed in the lake as part of this project will be beneficial to fish, wildlife, and water quality. Special experimental measures were installed to try to prevent carp (abundant in this lake) from uprooting the plants. The experimental measures consisted of a heavy erosion control netting staked to the lake bottom. The plants were planted through this netting.
  4. The diverse native plants installed at this site will provide multiple wildlife benefits.
  5. The wildflowers and native grasses are attractive and low maintenance.

The Anoka Conservation District coordinated this project. The landowner did the installation work and provided partial funding. The SRWMO provided cost share.

Note: all projects below the ordinary high water mark of public waters require a permit from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
