Greenways Planning

City of Ramsey Greenway Project

In 2002, The City of Ramsey in southwestern Anoka County is bordered by the Rum River to the east and the Mississippi River to the southwest, providing critical habitat links outside of the city. Although Ramsey has experienced significant development in recent years the area contains several rare or endangered species and provides important links connecting Ford Brook, Rum River and the Mississippi River. The city also has an extensive municipal park and trail system with intentions of expanding the trail systems to meet the needs of the growing community. With a Metro DNR Greenways grant land cover inventory started in July of 2002 and was completed in the spring of 2003. The land cover inventory and the greenway planning will assist in open space protection and trail corridor planning.

The City of Ramsey Greenway Report has identified hundreds of acres of high quality natural resources and thousands of acres of open space corridors. The natural resources identified and the corridors connecting them will help frame the natural resource management conducted in the city for several years to come. The report is intended to provide a foundation for the City to carry out park and open space planning in an effort to protect the natural resources important to the community as it continues to grow. The ACD will use the information to focus on areas for conservation easements, habitat restoration and backyard conservation. ACD hopes to build on the partnership formed with the City of Ramsey during the Greenway planning process to continue work that protects and enhances natural resources in the community.
