Metro Greenways
In 1998 the Minnesota Legislature established the Metro Greenways program to preserve and enhance natural resources in the seven county metropolitan area. The program coordinates the development of a regional network of natural areas, parks, wildlife habitat and open space connected by wildlife corridors. The principal goal of the program is to establish a continuous network of natural areas and open spaces to protect and enhance the ecological benefits these areas provide all residents of the region.
Greenway Planning Process
- A comprehensive inventory is conducted of natural resources and landcover
throughout a municipality.
- Landcover is mapped using DNR mapping standards.
- Significant natural resources are identified.
- Wildlife
corridors with significant natural resources and habitat diversity are
identified between hubs.
- Comprehensive plans are developed to enhance, connect or restore regionally and/or significant natural habitat.
