Prairie Management:

Prairie Reconstruction

Prairie reconstruction is the establishment of native prairie grasses and wildflowers on sites currently growing crops, turf or other non-native vegetation. Reconstruction involves assessing the site to determine the appropriate vegetation type, preparing the site, seeding, weeding and long-term maintenance. Most homeowners with the aid of a good book or manual can construct small prairie plots. Large-scale prairie reconstruction is complex and can be a time-consuming process. Proper site preparation, species selection, planting technique, and a comprehensive maintenance strategy are all important to a successful prairie reconstruction. Most people undertaking a large-scale reconstruction project choose to consult with a professional to develop a suitable plan to meet the needs of the landowner and wildlife.
