Prairie Management
A majority of Anoka County's landscape was once covered with oak savanna, deciduous forest and prairie. Small pockets of native oak savanna and prairie still exist within Anoka County, but less than 1/10th of 1% remain in Minnesota. While some of the small mammals, insects and birds that are dependant on these grassland ecosystems have been able to adapt to new land uses such as agriculture and low-density development, most have seen dramatic declines in populations as development encroaches on their habitat. Landowners have become increasingly interested in managing their property to provide for wildlife habitat. Reconstructing or Restoring a prairie can provide habitat for birds such as the loggerhead shrike, meadowlarks, sparrows, and wrens.
