Erosion Control Methods

Erosion Control Blanket

Erosion control blanket, a temporary protective blanket placed on top of bare soil, is an important component of many bio-engineering projects. Blanket is staked on the soil surface or wrapped around the soil to protect against wind and water erosion while plants are becoming established. ECB can be made of many combinations of materials (coconut, straw, wood fiber, plastic) depending on site conditions and desired durability. The blanket will also aid in germination of seeds through moisture retention. When installing ECB it is important to make sure it is secured properly. Edges should be trenched into the soil to prevent water from undermining the blanket. When multiple blankets are needed they should overlap by at least 6".
