Forest Management

Much of Anoka County is composed of forested lands. Healthy forests are very important for everyone. They improve water quality and quantity, they are essential habitat for plants and animals in our region, and they are also an important part of our economy. Our forests face many threats to their well being, including development, disease, insects and invasive species. Proper forest management can identify and prevent these threats before they permanently damage our remaining forests.

If your forest is in need of improvement due to logging, insect damage, oak wilt or other disturbance you may want to consider planting additional trees. Before starting any reforestation project it is important to know the conditions of the site. Make note of the soil type, soil moisture, sunlight and the surrounding habitat. It's also important to have some objectives when planning your reforestation project. Consider the function of any planting, including: windbreaks, animal habitat, visual screen, aesthetics, etc. Whatever, you are planting it is important to utilize Anoka Sandplain native species whenever possible, avoid nonnatives and never plant invasive species.
