MOUNTAIN ASH
(Sorbus americana)
Mountain ash is a small slow growing tree with attractive bright orange fruit clusters that provide food for songbirds (especially cedar waxwings). It can reach heights of 10-30', is moderately shade tolerant, is intolerant of drought and prefers loamy soils.
Wildlife Food & Cover: Good food - fruit, songbirds, Cedar waxwings. Fair cover- perching, some nesting.
Flowers: White flat topped cluster, May
Fruit: Bright orange pome, Aug-Sept
Ecosystem: Dry Oak Forest, Mesic (Moist) Oak Forest
Other: Attractive fruit clusters rapidly consumed by songbirds (esp. Cedar Waxwings)
